Painting, Sculpture & Mixed Media
Christopher Stone is a British artist who has lived and worked in Ibiza for forty years. His life as an artist began more than five decades ago in London, passed through Hornsey College of Art and Central Saint Martins, and included an eighteen year working friendship with the sculptor Barry Flanagan.
None of it produced a tidy career. It produced Lost Artist Studios.
At Lost, the boundaries between studio, home, garden and artwork have gradually disappeared. Sculptures stand among the trees, dogs leap across the walls and unfinished paintings wait beside pieces of bronze, corten steel, fibreglass and resin. Stone moves between sculpture, painting, works on paper and found materials, following the idea rather than a fixed method.
The human figure, words, memories and animals, especially the Ibizan Podenco, run throughout his work. It can be funny, tender, irreverent or unsettling, and occasionally all four at once.
After forty years, Ibiza is not a backdrop to Stone’s work. It is inside it. And after more than fifty years as an artist, he is not looking back at a finished career. He is still very much in the middle of it.
